All eyes are on the Gulf, as a broad area of low pressure continues to track westward, bringing the potential for unsettled weather. This area is denoted the title AL93, or Invest 93L, and surface observations indicate that this system is generating disorganized showers and thunderstorms, primarily situated to the south of its center.&nbsp; The National Hurricane Center has this at a 40% chance of tropical formation in the next 48 hours.<video src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/07/07162-1752690141382.mp4" controls="true" width="100%"></video><h1>Forecast Models</h1>Models indicate that this disturbance will continue moving westward and may emerge or redevelop over the far northeastern to north-central Gulf of Mexico. It is expected to approach the Louisiana coast by Thursday. If the system remains far enough offshore, environmental conditions in the Gulf could support further development. In that case, a tropical depression may still form within the next couple of days before the system moves inland by the end of the week.&nbsp;<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/07/Screenshot 2025-07-16 132540-1752693944913.png"><h1>Forecast Factors</h1>Why is the northern Gulf being highlighted for development in the middle of July? Models favor upper-level troughing to develop over the region toward the middle of the week, which is likely to spur lift and heavy rain. An area of high pressure will slide west by Thursday, helping steer our system to the north, into land. Where that happens is still up in the air. It will depend on the strength of both the system and the high.<video src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/07/07164-1752690229935.mp4" controls="true" width="100%"></video><h1>Rainfall and Flooding Concerns&nbsp;</h1>Regardless of whether it develops into a tropical cyclone, the system is capable of producing heavy rainfall. Flood Watches are in effect for portions of Louisiana and Mississippi.<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/07/Screenshot 2025-07-16 122414-1752690287129.png">Some models have the potential of 2-5" of rainfall over the next several days for the Gulf Coast.<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/07/Screenshot 2025-07-16 122639-1752690403574.png">As we continue to iron out the details of this system, check back with the forecast, especially if you have interests along any of the Gulf Coast states.

Taban Sharifi grew up in Southern California between Los Angeles and San Diego. She is a Certified Broadcast Meteorologist (CBM) with the American Meteorological Society (AMS). She has a B.S. in Atmospheric, Oceanic, and Environmental Sciences with a minor in Environmental Systems and Society from the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA). Go Bruins! While in school, Taban was a meteorology intern with NBC LA. There she helped forecast daily weather for the greater Los Angeles region and created a playbook to deploy weather sensors for NBC owned-and-operated stations across the country. Her first on-air job took her to San Angelo, Texas, where she was a morning meteorologist and co-anchor. Working in West Texas gave her knowledge and experience covering severe storms. From there, she moved to Palm Springs, California. People think forecasting in California is sunshine all the time, but with temperatures in the 120’s, wildfires, damaging winds, floodings, and earthquakes, the forecasting kept her very busy! She also worked there as a general assignment reporter and told community stories. Taban is excited for the challenge and opportunity to forecast nationally with WeatherNation. She also looks forward to exploring all that Colorado has to offer!

A fire tornado was spotted near La Sal, Utah on Saturday, July 12 (below). This is also known as a firenado or fire whirl. <div class="twitter-tweet" style="display: flex; justify-content: center" data-twitt-post-id="1944827307769913683" src="https://x.com/WeatherNation/status/1944827307769913683"></div>This formed because of the Deer Creek Fire burning in Utah. The fire is over 14,000 acres and 7% contained. The <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow" href="https://www.weather.gov/gjt/12July2025_FireInducedTornado">National Weather Service out of Grand Junction, CO</a> has given this a preliminary EF-2 rating. They stated that the firenado was on the ground for about 12 minutes. The report put out states, "Many of the affected structures burned&nbsp;after the tornado occurred, but&nbsp;wind damage sustained by the remaining structures resulted in the tornado being given an&nbsp;EF-2 rating."No residents or fire personnel were injured. <h2>How does a firenado happen?</h2>1. Intense Heat from a Wildfire: A large wildfire produces an enormous amount of heat, which causes the air directly above it to rapidly rise. This rising hot air creates a powerful updraft.2. Spinning Air is Introduced: If there are strong winds or turbulent conditions nearby, they can introduce rotation into this updraft. The rotation could be from wind shear (a change in wind direction or speed with height) or from nearby topography funneling the wind.3. Vortex Tightens and Strengthens: As the hot air continues to rise and spin, it forms a vortex — similar to a dust devil. The spinning column of air can tighten and intensify, pulling flames, smoke, ash, and burning debris upward into the air.<video src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/07/07168-1752693521959.mp4" controls="true" width="100%"></video>

A strong July cold front is racing through the Northern Rockies and Dakotas. Cities that were in the 90s are now in the 60s! That cold front and temperature contrast will also spark a severe weather risk. Temperatures are well below average across the north-central plains.<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/07/Screenshot 2025-07-16 120141-1752688906745.png"><h1>Severe Weather Outlook</h1>The SPC has issued a Slight Risk (yellow color) for Wednesday across Chicago, IL, Madison, WI, Denver, CO, and Cheyenne, WY. All threats will be on the table, including damaging winds. Strong July Cold Front Sparks Severe Weather

A cold front pushing through the Eastern Seaboard was responsible for dozens of reports of flash flooding on Monday, so much so that the Governor of New Jersey declared a State of Emergency for flash flooding. The subway system in New York City saw quick rising waters.<div class="twitter-tweet" style="display: flex; justify-content: center" data-twitt-post-id="1945122429342282186" src="https://x.com/WeatherNation/status/1945122429342282186"></div>The flash flooding in the Northeast on Monday led to airport delays at Newark, JFK, and LaGuardia. Many areas broke numerous records for the day! NYC's Central Park clocked in 2.07" of rainfall in one hour. That makes it the second highest one hour rainfall total to ever be recorded in Central Park.<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/07/Screenshot 2025-07-15 061632-1752581880381.jpg"><h2>More Flooding is Possible: Through Thursday</h2>It's gotten back to the hot and humid swing of things. Temperatures are going to feel close to 100 through Thursday. All of that heat and humidity can pave the way for more showers and storms. <img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/07/Screenshot 2025-07-16 120737-1752689261089.png">Some of the areas that got some of the heaviest rain and previous flooding are again under Flood Watches through Thursday.<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/07/Screenshot 2025-07-16 120856-1752689349745.png">Our next system pushes in from the west and will bring a more widespread threat of heavy rainfall. The next round moves through along a frontal boundary. Here's what it could look like over the next few days:<video src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/07/07161-1752689451453.mp4" controls="true" width="100%"></video>While this won't be quite as widespread as the rainfall earlier in the week - where it does rain could lead to renewed problems. Feasibly, any one of these storms over the next few days could contain damaging winds, too. Alana Cameron was born and raised in Canada in the city of Mississauga, just outside of Toronto. Alana is the oldest of 4 siblings, all close in age, and grew up playing outside with them in all types of weather. After graduating high school, Alana moved to study at the University of British Columbia in Kelowna for a year before transferring to Dalhousie University in Halifax, Nova Scotia where she completed a Bachelor of Science in Physics and Atmospheric Science. Upon completion, Alana moved back to Toronto where she completed a post-grad degree in Meteorology at York University. After her post-grad, she went on to complete another post-grad in Broadcast Journalism - TV News at Fanshawe College in London, Ontario. During her final year of studies she had the privilege of interning with the best in the business in Canada at The Weather Network. Once she finished her internship, she got the call from small-town Denison, Texas where she accepted a job as an on-air meteorologist at KTEN-TV, right in tornado alley, covering severe weather from Sherman/Denison (North Texas) to Ada (Southern Oklahoma). After the most active tornado season Oklahoma had seen in May 2019 (105 tornadoes!) Alana is excited to join WeatherNation to cover weather all across the nation. Heat advisories have been issued across the country through Wednesday for most of the country, and through Thursday for the northeast. Dangerously hot temperatures that could bring impacts to your health and safety are expected for both days.<h2>Western U.S.</h2>Heat advisories remain in effect across much of the West through Wednesday, following a stretch of extreme temperatures that began over the weekend.<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/07/Screenshot 2025-07-16 044328-1752662624544.png">It is no surprise the desert feels like a desert, but if you are visiting for summer vacation, take these numbers seriously. Keep the rain boots handy in Florida - heavy rain is expected to inundate parts of the state from the end of the weekend into the middle of the upcoming week. Rainfall totals are expected to average 3-6" in Central and South Florida, with higher totals likely for areas that see multiple heavy downpours. Some locations may end up with 7-10" of rain by the time this storm system moves out.This system could develop into our next tropical system. Heavy Rain, Flooding Threat Returns to Florida

Rob grew up in South Florida, where daily afternoon storms and hurricanes piqued his interest in meteorology early on. That interest was fostered by his teachers and his father, who one time brought him onto the roof of their home to watch a funnel cloud move through the Everglades several miles away. Years of filmmaking and tv production in high school gradually pushed him toward broadcast meteorology at Florida State University, where he joined and eventually led the student run daily weather show. After graduating with a Bachelors of Science in Meteorology, he began his career at KESQ in Palm Springs, California before heading to KFSN in Fresno and WLOS in Asheville, North Carolina. He has covered a diverse array of extreme weather events, including haboobs and flash flooding in the desert, extreme snow in the Sierra, hurricanes, and Appalachian ice storms. He also enjoys telling stories and reporting about weather issues.

Friday was another busy day with severe weather and flash flooding. A Flash Flood Emergency was issued for Davenport, IA after they picked up over four inches of rain. The winds from Friday's storms were over 70 plus mph!<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/07/Screenshot 2025-07-12 055745-1752321471706.png"><h1>Timing</h1>Friday's leftover storms will be the catalyst for additional shower and thunderstorm development across parts of the Ohio Valley and Great Lakes region on Saturday, as will the frontal boundary that moves into the region. The surface low could also help to spur a few supercells, capable of producing a tornado or two in eastern Michigan, primarily from the late morning through mid-afternoon.<h1>SATURDAY</h1><video src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/07/FORECAST-1752352202968.mp4" controls="true" width="100%"></video>As the front continues to move, strong thunderstorms may redevelop early Saturday over the central High Plains. Behind the front, a high-pressure system ushering in cooler, drier air from western Canada will settle over the northern High Plains, bringing a temporary break from the stormy conditions. <img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/07/PIC 1-1752352628146.jpg">Rainfall rates will remain high, with 1-2" of rain per hour possible. Severe Storm Risk Pushes into the Great Lakes, Ohio Valley

This tornado hit downtown Fort Lauderdale, FL on Saturday causing power flashes and damage to areas near Federal Highway and Los Olas Boulevard. It was associated with a line of heavy rain that had been crossing much of the state for most of the day. The National Weather Service (NWS) confirmed the tornado, saying they received multiple videos and phone calls regarding the severe storm. Meteorologists from NWS Miami will survey the damage to determine the strength of the tornado.<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2024/01/Florida Funnels 1-06-1704630529995.png">This storm was in addition to a couple of funnel clouds across South Florida on Saturday. Video on social media showed what appeared to be a funnel cloud near Moore Haven, Florida around 1:30 p.m. ET near Rt. 78. Another report of a funnel cloud came in from St. Lucie County about an hour later from an off-duty NWS meteorologist. Both reports did not specifically say the funnel clouds touched down as tornadoes.<video src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2024/01/Fort Lauderdale tornado loop-1704630618569.mp4" controls="true" width="100%"></video>Additional pockets of heavy rain will develop across South Florida through Sunday. This will mean it will be a little bit cloudy for your beach day in Florida on Sunday (especially in the southern part of the state)! Another one to two inches of rain, isolated amounts up to three inches, will be possible in South Florida through the end of the weekend.<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2024/01/Screenshot 2024-01-06 160800-1704582577245.jpg">Additional severe storms will return to Florida this week on Monday and Tuesday.
